When the teeth do not meet correctly (malocclusion), susceptibility to tooth decay, gum disease and jaw problems becomes more prevalent.
The primary goals of orthodontic treatment are to improve how the teeth fit together and function and to achieve a balance and harmony between the teeth and face for a beautiful smile!
When is the best time to start?
The best time to start depends on the problem. In children, treatment may be done in two phases, Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 orthodontics most often occurs between ages 6 to 11 and takes between 1 to 1.5 years to complete. An initial evaluation to determine if early Phase 1 treatment is needed may be recommended by your family dentist. Early orthodontics for children may achieve results not possible once the face and jaw have finished growing. After the adult teeth have erupted between ages 11 and 13 years of age, Phase 2 orthodontic treatment may be recommended if the teeth are not properly aligned. This treatment usually takes between 2 and 3 years to complete.

Am I too old for orthodontics?
There is no age limit to orthodontics. No one is ever too old to start treatment. More than 30% of orthodontic patients are over 18 years of age. Many advances in dental technology have made the process easier, more efficient and more esthetic - which have encouraged more adults to seek orthodontic treatment.

How long will treatment last?
Your treatment can last from 3 months to 3 years, depending on the severity of the problem and the extent of the correction needed. Each person's problem is different, requiring an individualized treatment plan based on a complete diagnosis from orthodontic study models of the teeth and X-rays.
It is important to maintain good brushing and flossing during treatment, while keeping appointments and making sure your appliances do not break. Neglect of any of these factors can lengthen the time you are wearing braces.
